Written by Bystrík Šikula. A young married man, the father of a 5-year- old boy, dreams of getting into the United States. The Iron Curtain fell and he had to see America and earn some money. In the first part of the book the family tries to decide who is going to be the one to leave there for work – despite a number of family intrigues taking place. The second part describes the stay of the main character in the U.S., which he tries to explore for both himself and the reader. It reveals the typical thinking of a Slovak man of the recent times. Both parts share a central motive – the tragedy of a decadent marriage. The author knows not only of the pleasant but also of the dark aspects of the relationship between a man and a woman. This piece is an artistically and morally valuable book, grasping the author’s interest from the first until the last page.
